"M̄-hó," lāu lâng kóng. "Hit chiah chûn tng hó-ūn. Lí tio̍h koh tòe in."

"M̄-koh lí kám bē-kì-tit, lí bat peh-cha̍p chhit kang lia̍h bô hî, āu-lâi liân-sòa saⁿ lé-pài lán ta̍k-kang lóng lia̍h tio̍h tōa-bóe hî."

1. 八十四工無掠著魚

伊是一个老人, ka-tī 一人 kò 一隻細船 tī Mexico /mek.si.ko/ 灣海流掠魚. 已經八十四工, 伊攏無掠著魚. 頭前四十工, 有一个查埔囡仔綴伊. 四十工掠無魚了, 囡仔 ê 爸母 kā 講, 這个老人絕對是落屎星, 無人比伊閣較衰 lah. 囡仔聽 in ê 話, 去綴別隻船, 第一禮拜 tō 掠著三尾大魚. 逐工看老人空船轉來, 囡仔替伊心酸, tō 落去 kā 伊鬥提釣線捆, 抑是搭鉤, 魚槍, kap 捲 tī 船桅 ê 布帆. 彼布帆用麵粉袋仔補過, 捲起來看著 ná 像注定永遠戰敗 ê 軍旗.

老人生做焦瘦, 伊 ê ām-kún 後有深深 ê 皺痕, 喙 phé 有良性皮膚癌烏斑, he 是熱帶海水反射日光所引起 ê. 伊 ê 雙手 koh 有用釣線搝魚受傷所留落來 ê 深巡疤痕. 毋過, chiah-ê 疤攏毋是新 ê, 攏舊 kah ná 無魚 ê 沙漠受風化侵蝕所形成 ê 彼款模樣.

伊規身逐位攏老, kan-ta 彼對目睭猶少年, 色彩 ná 海, 青 lin-lin, 開朗樂觀, 毋認輸.

"Santiago," ùi 拖船起岸 hia, in tng-teh peh 堤岸 ê 時, 囡仔 kā 講: "我會當 koh 綴你 ah. 阮有趁一寡錢."

老人 bat 教囡仔掠魚, 所以囡仔 kap 伊真親.

"毋好," 老人講. "彼隻船當好運. 你著 koh 綴 in."

"毋過你敢袂記得, 你 bat 八十七工掠無魚, 後來連紲三禮拜咱逐工攏掠著大尾魚."

He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish. In the first forty days a boy had been with him. But after forty days without a fish the boy’s parents had told him that the old man was now definitely and finally salao, which is the worst form of unlucky, and the boy had gone at their orders in another boat which caught three good fish the first week. It made the boy sad to see the old man come in each day with his skiff empty and he always went down to help him carry either the coiled lines or the gaff and harpoon and the sail that was furled around the mast. The sail was patched with flour sacks and, furled, it looked like the flag of permanent defeat.

The old man was thin and gaunt with deep wrinkles in the back of his neck. The brown blotches of the benevolent skin cancer the sun brings from its reflection on the tropic sea were on his cheeks. The blotches ran well down the sides of his face and his hands had the deep-creased scars from handling heavy fish on the cords. But none of these scars were fresh. They were as old as erosions in a fishless desert.

Everything about him was old except his eyes and they were the same color as the sea and were cheerful and undefeated.

“Santiago,” the boy said to him as they climbed the bank from where the skiff was hauled up. “I could go with you again. We’ve made some money.”

The old man had taught the boy to fish and the boy loved him.

“No,” the old man said. “You’re with a lucky boat. Stay with them.”

“But remember how you went eighty-seven days without fish and then we caught big ones every day for three weeks.”
